Bread of God (Pão de Deus)

godbread-zrBread of God (Pão de Deus), is a delicious type of bread covered with coconut, sugar and egg yolks cream.

It is an easy, simple and cheap recipe and you can easily freeze the bread and it doesn’t lose its flavour.

With ham, cheese, jam and other fillings, Bread of God can be served in afternoon snacks, parties and it is also a great addition to breakfast.

Ingredients:

  • A pinch of salt
  • 3.5 ounces (100 grams) margarine
  • 0.70 ounces (20 grams) bio yeast
  • 3.5 decilitres tepid milk
  • 22 ounces (625 grams) fine cake flour without yeast
  • ½ lemon zest
  • 3.5 ounces (100 grams) grated coconut
  • 2 tablespoons rum (optional)
  • 7.9 ounces (225 grams) sugar
  • 5 eggs
  • Powder sugar

How to make Bread of God:

  • Start by dissolving the yeast in 0.5 decilitres of tepid milk. Then, put 4.4 ounces (125 grams) of flour in a bowl and make a hole in the centre. Put the yeast and 2 eggs in the hole and then mix all the ingredients very well and leave the mix to leaven.
  • Put the rest of the flour in another bowl and make another hole in the centre. Put 4.4 ounces (125 grams) of sugar and the soften margarine in the hole.
  • Now, add the dough you left to leaven, the lemon zest, the rum and the salt and knead very well. Add milk gradually while you are kneading and then leave the dough to leaven again until it doubles its size.
  • Now linen a baking tray with greaseproof paper.
  • Make balls out of the dough (each should weight around 2.8 ounces/ 80 grams) and place them on the tray. Leave them to leaven a little more until they grow and put them on the side.
  • Turn the oven on at 350ºF (180ºC).
    Now it’s time to make the coating. Mix the sugar, the 3 eggs you have left and the coconut very well, then pour this dough on top of each ball.
  • Lastly, put the baking tray in the oven for about 35 minutes. When this time is up, remove it from the oven and powder the bread with powdered sugar.
