Grandma’s Own Portuguese Donuts (Sonhos)

Grandma-Own Portuguese DonutsThis Sonhos recipe is a variation of the well-known Portuguese Christmas recipe.


  • Powdered sugar and cinnamon
  • Oil to fry
  • 2 tablespoons milk (optional)
  • Fine salt to your taste
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 lemon peel
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon margarine
  • 1 teacup water
  • 1 teacup flour
  • 3 eggs

How to make Sonhos:

  • Start by placing a pan on heat with the water, the lemon peel, the cinnamon stick, the margarine, the olive oil and the salt.
  • When the mix starts boiling, remove the lemon peel and the cinnamon stick. Add the flour.
  • Mix very well until you get a dough shaped like a ball which is not stuck to the bottom of the pan.
  • Then, remove the pan from heat and mould the dough into a ball. Cover it with a slightly wet cloth until it cools.
  • When the dough cools, mix it with the eggs. Add the eggs one at a time and knead the dough very well with your hands.
  • If you think the dough is too thick, you can add two tablespoons of milk and knead again.
