ortuguese-Doughnuts with Orange SyrupThis Portuguese Doughnuts with Orange Syrup recipe is yet another Christmas delight and an original way of making the delicious Portuguese doughnuts.

  • powdered sugar
  • oil to fry
  • 7 eggs
  • 12.3 ounces wheat flour
  • 1 orange peel
  • 3.5 ounces lard
  • 2.5 decilitres water
  • 2.5 decilitres milk

Ingredients for the Orange Syrup:

  • 1 orange peel
  • 1.5 decilitres water
  • 1 decilitre orange juice
  • 8.8 ounces sugar

How to make Portuguese Doughnuts with Orange Syrup:

  • Start by mixing the milk, the water, the lard and the orange peel in a pan. Place the pan on heat.
  • When the mix boils, remove it from heat and add all the flour at once.
  • Mix everything very well and place the pan on heat again. Stir the mix until it becomes a ball of dough unstuck from the bottom of the pan. Place the dough in a cold surface, remove the orange peel and leave it cooling.
  • When the dough is cold, add the eggs, one by one. After adding each egg, make sure you knead the dough very well until all the ingredients are well mixed.
  • Fill the bottom of a deep frying pan with oil and heat it. With a spoon, remove pieces of dough and fry them. Make sure you fry small amounts of dough at a time – their size increases a lot when fried – and that they are quite golden and fluffy.
  • When the doughnuts are golden, remove them from the pan and place them in a plate. Powder them with the powdered sugar.
  • For the orange syrup, you will need to mix all the ingredients and boil them for 5 minutes.
  • You can pour this syrup on top of the doughnuts or serve it on the side.
