Sweet Potato CookiesThese Sweet Potato Cookies are one of the most popular Christmas desserts in Portugal. They’re easy to make.


  • 3 eggs
  • 2.6 ounces (75 grams) plain wheat flour
  • 5.2 ounces (150 grams) corn flour
  • 1 orange peel
  • 1.7 ounces (50 grams) grated coconut
  • 4.4 ounces (125 grams) ground almonds
  • 26.4 ounces (750 grams) sugar
  • 14.1 ounces (400 grams) cooked sweet potato

How to make Sweet Potato Cookies:

  • Start by peeling the Sweet potatoes and grinding them with a food mill. Then, add the sugar and place the mix on heat.
  • When the mix starts boiling, add the eggs, the orange peel, the coconut and the almonds and mix everything very well.
  • Add the flours and mix all the ingredients while they’re still cooking.
  • When the dough is ready, cast small balls out of it (they should weight around 1 ounce – 30 grams) and then shape those balls into barrels.
  • Grease a baking tray with butter and powder it with flour.
  • Place the barrel shaped dough in it separated by about 1.1 inches (3 centimetres).
  • When the baking tray is full, brush the barrels with egg yolk and put them in a very hot oven.
